I bought this unit because of it's advertising more than from necessity, so saying that if you have a farely new unit that plays DVD's chances are it is as good as this unit. I have put this machine through its pacess. I recomend it. If you are buying it because you don't have a player now you will not be disapionted. It is clear and crisp with sharp edges. Quallity of picture is supper.I tryed some of my old DVD's that had a fadded picture to begin with and it did not do much for them, but then i guess they were to far gone to begin with.
Hmmmm.let me think about that one. Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired, and that's putting it mildly. I purchased this DVD player 1/17/2009. DON'T BUY ANYTHING TOSHIBA. It's a shame that amazon won't let me give it 0 stars. In may 2009, the screen started turning all green when I tried to watch a DVD. After over a month of emails with Toshiba, they tell me I can purchase a replacement for $90.
We have an HD-DVD player, and this actually seems to do a better job of rendering standard DVDs. First, the DVD tray does not offer anywhere to put your finger at the edge of the disc -- you have to stick your finger in the center hole of the DVD to remove it.
I haven't read through the owner's manual, but there isn't an obvious way to turn off those lights during playback. Second, the lights on the front of the player are a little distracting.
We recently hooked up an XD-E500 to our 22" LCD TV via the HDMI output. I dock it a star for two small annoyances.
They can be distracting in a dark room.In all, I recommend the player without reservations -- it should suffice to breathe new life into your existing DVD collection. The picture at the TV's native resolution of 720p is wonderful.
On the smallish screen, they look just about the same as HD-DVDs.
I think Toshiba has some serious quality issues with these. Probably soon to be returned as well. The Amazon replacement service has been great, unfortunately these DVD players are not. Like some others I bought this player on the basis of early good reviews and a great price. However, the first player died after one DVD and now the replacement is acting badly.
Truthfully I prefer this unit to the similar priced Sony I have for the living room's rig (except for the remote:). When hooked up to a re-certified Sylvania 32" TV the picture quality is impressive - Remote is decent - Hitachi could definitely take a few cues from Sylvania on design - but it works fine.
